European Sound Specialist Education and Curriculum Exchange

We are a strategic partnership of professional organisations and education providers in the field of live sound engineering, co-funded by the ERASMUS+ programme of the European Union.

Together we are working to develop a comprehensive curriculum for a trans-national qualification of live sound engineers on Level 5 of the European Qualification Framework.

Vienna, Nov. 2022

Our first public multiplier event took place on November 23 and 24 at MEET 2022 (International Trade Fair for event technology & symposium for events and theatre), hosted by our partner OETHG in Vienna.

Frankfurt, April 2023

We had a very fruitful second multiplier event at Prolight+Sound 2023 in Frankfurt / Germany, hosted by our partners IGVW and EurAka. On this day, we shared information about the results of our stakeholder surveys and our comprehensive overview of existing qualifications in the live audio field in Europe, and we collected valuable opinions on which skills and competences should be included in our European Sound Specialist profile. Moreover, we had very inspiring discussions with sound educators from including Scandiavia.

We co-hosted this event with a multiplier of our sister ERASMUS+ project PACE-VET. PACE-VET is dedicated to research into micro credentials and prior learning certification in our field. Participants get the opportunity to learn about both projects in separate but consecutive sessions.

Düsseldorf, November 2023

Our next multiplier event takes place at #tmt32 (Tonmeistertagung) in Düsseldorf on Nov. 9, 10:30, on the Open Stage, where we will give a status update and discuss with participants the challenges of sound engineering education and the demands of the future labour market.

Project milestones

Having receiving a formal approval of our project proposal in October 2021, we have kicked off the project at the 31. Tonmeistertagung / VDT International Convention in Düsseldorf, Germany, in November.

Our first two research projects have been completed:

  • a "Skills and Competences overview of pre-existing sound specialist qualifications of EQF level 5 or similar, by country", and
  • a "Comparative table of market demands and stakeholder expectations for sound specialists, by country"

We completed this research in November 2022.

Based on its results, we will move to the final project result, the compliation of a "European Sound Specialist (ESS) curriculum and teaching manual"
